We met in Livingstone, Zambia. When we first met there he had never sat in a kayak before. Yet in the space of a few years he became one of the most renowned, respect3ed and trusted safety kayakers, rafting guides and expedition leaders on the African continent. This is testimony to his focus, drive and determination; a few of his admirable qualities.

Hendri was always conscientious and professional on the water. When things went wrong (and they did) you know Hendri would be cool and reliable under pressure. There were times we entrusted our lives to each other and I always knew I was in safe hands.

Hendri could and would talk to anyone. He was chivalrous and a true gentleman. He also had a brilliantly dry sense of humour and could make people lau7gh and relax in the direst of situations; an invaluable skill to have at such times…

Hendri was often heard saying: “The gift that keeps on giving”. Though not (always) speaking about himself, the phrase aptly sums up the man Hendri was. His adventures have enriched the lives of countless people, including mine. In his short life Hendri experienced, accomplished and gave more than most of us will do even if we live twice as long…His exploits are legendary…
